Cameron Charles will have no small task Saturday.

The Bishop Kelly High newcomer will make his first start at quarterback in a varsity football game when the Knights host Portland-based Central Catholic at 1 p.m.

Charles' introduction to life as a quarterback at BK begins against a team that has qualified for the 6A state quarterfinals in five of the last eight years at Oregon's largest classification.

And there will be expectations for Charles - expectations come with the territory at a school that has become accustomed to quality quarterback play and contending for state titles.

"There's pressure," Charles said. "(But) it's not overwhelming."

Perhaps, Charles' past has helped him prepare for his new role.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior transfer from McCall-Donnelly grew up watching his brothers, Colt and Clay, star as quarterbacks at McCall-Donnelly. Colt was later a back-up quarterback at Oregon State. Clay, the 2004 3A All-Idaho Player of the Year, was on the Michigan State team.

"Obviously, they were leaders of their teams and they had successful careers as football players in high school and pretty much at the college level," Charles said. "I played quarterback growing up and watching, so it's not really new to me, but I haven't really experienced that yet."

The left-handed throwing Charles said he took "a few" snaps at quarterback as a sophomore at McCall-Donnelly. He started at safety in 2006 before a shoulder injury ended his season. Surgery on his right shoulder prevented him from playing in 2007.

"It took me three and a half or four months to fully be back with a full range of motion," he said.

Charles recently moved to Boise with his family. He chose to attend BK. It was good timing for the Knights after 2007 starter Marcus Wood transferred to Rocky Mountain for his senior year.

"The one thing about Cam that I really like is the kids respect him," said BK coach Jack Parker, who is also the offensive coordinator. "They respect him and they follow him. He has good leadership qualities. He throws the ball well and also runs the option very well. So, he allows us to do more than one thing."
