The Boise Philharmonic's new music director, Robert Franz, was honored when the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra received the Leonard Bernstein Award for Educational Programming from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) at the League of American Orchestra's Conference in Denver.

Franz is the resident conductor with that company and has developed and produced its educational outreach for the past three years. Franz's programs have more than doubled the number of students attending BPO Youth Concerts to more than 33,000 in 2008.

Franz will continue his position in Buffalo until the end of the 2008-09 season. He starts his first season in Boise in September.

One of his goals in Boise is to create similar educational programs in the Treasure Valley, he said.

He also is the newly appointed associate conductor at the Houston Symphony, and music director of the Mansfield Symphony in Mansfield, Ohio.
