
Now that summer is here, grasshoppers can be found near practically any river, and they're almost irresistible to trout.
Catch a bunch of hoppers, and keep them alive if possible.
A great way to fish them is with no weight on an open bail. Flip the unweighted hopper into the current and let it drift naturally downstream. When a fish gobbles it, flip your bail and set the hook. It's an exciting way to fish.
For fly anglers, grab a live hopper off the bank and toss it into the river. It's a great way to see where the fish are holding. Follow the live hopper with a fly, and it will usually take the imitation.
