If you want to try a mountain bike race, the Silver Creek Pedal and Plunge on Aug. 16 has terrain matched for every skill level.

The courses near Garden Valley have lots of singletrack, climbing, creek crossings and flats. They pass through gorgeous Idaho backcountry from ponderosa pine ridges, lodgepole flats to alpine meadows.

The beginner loop is designed for first-time racers, with a mix of trail types and a couple climbs. The kids' course has lots of spectator viewing.

For more information on the race, to go to www.knobbytireseries.com.

Here's a brief description of each course:

• Pro/expert: 30 miles, 5,800-foot elevation gain

• Sport men: 23 miles, 4,700-foot elevation gain

• Sport women, sport juniors: 24 miles, 3,600-foot elevation gain.

• Beginner: 16 miles, 2,400-foot elevation gain.

• Trailblazers (children): 2-mile loop course.
