Boise State will face Virginia Tech on Oct. 2, 2010 at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., the Broncos and FedEx Field announced Thursday evening.
“We are very excited about facing the caliber of a team like Virginia Tech,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said in a release by the school.
Boise State will receive $1.25 million for playing in the game.
“This has all the markings of a great intersectional matchup next year,” athletic director Gene Bleymaier said.
FedEx Field is home to the NFL's Washington Redskins. Virginia Tech played USC at the stadium in 2004.
Virginia Tech has won 10 or more games in eight of the last 10 seasons. The Hokies are 100-30 in the last 10 years. Boise State is 108-20 in that time.
"We are excited to have two premier collegiate football programs compete at FedExField,” Redskins Chief Operating Officer Mitch Gershman said in a release. "There is a significant Virginia Tech alumni base in the Washington Metropolitan area, which will have the opportunity to watch the 2008 ACC champion Hokies play the 2008 WAC champion Boise State Broncos. We are actively pursuing high-profile college football games and other exciting events at FedExField."
Virginia Tech will be the home team and the Atlantic Coast Conference will own the television rights to the game. Information on tickets sales and kickoff time will be released at a later date.
Bleymaier had been looking for a game to complete the 2010 non-conference schedule. He said in May that with tough economic times, he would look for an opportunity to get a large paycheck.
In addition to Virginia Tech, Boise State will play Toledo (Sept. 11), Wyoming (Sept. 18) and Oregon State (Sept. 25) in 2010.
